In our most recent Southwest trip, we had not originally included Carlsbad Caverns as we had visited it before; after telling Rich that I did not really remember too much about our last visit, we included Carlsbad Caverns in this trip. The last time we visited Carlsbad Caverns, we took a Ranger Guided Tour. However, this time we took a Self-Guided Tour, which was much more interesting as we could walk and explore at our own pace, taking photos along the way.

Exploring the Natural Wonders of Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns is part of the Guadalupe Mountains near the Texas border and a testament to the natural wonders of this subterranean area, boasting an extensive cave system with stunning formations, beckoning us to explore a world of enchantment and be in awe of its natural beauty.

Formation at Carlsbad Caverns

The Big Room is a massive underground chamber covering more than 600,000 square feet and is one of the largest underground chambers in North America. The Doll’s Theater, Rock of Ages, and the Bottomless Pit are just a few of the special features that will captivate you as you walk through the Caverns. You will be amazed by the beauty of the stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and other bountiful formations you will notice on your walk through the Caverns.

The Bat Flight Program

Each evening from late spring to early fall, thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the cave at dusk in search of insects. Rich was really interested in seeing this spectacular event and we visited the amphitheater by the entrance to the Caverns at the designated time, which is generally right around sunset. The first day, it was canceled due to rain, so we stayed an extra day (visiting Guadalupe Mountains National Park). The second evening, the amphitheater was full of people, just waiting for this event; and we were all in awe of this magnificent experience. We just sat for a while and watched the bats swirling out of the cave and into the air in search of insects. It was an amazing experience.

Good to Know

When taking the Self-Guided Walking Tour, just know that it took us about 3 ½ hours to walk all of it at a moderate pace, while stopping to read and taking photos. We started at the entrance and walked down into the cave, then used the restroom located at the bottom by the elevator, then went back and walked the area off to the right, which is the Dolls Theatre. Then we took the elevator up to the top. Caves are generally around 60 degrees, and we were comfortable wearing hoodies on our walk through the Caverns.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park offers hiking trails and many beautiful views outside the Caverns. This is a park pass or fee area. There is a Visitors Center and restrooms by the entrance to the Caverns. It was hot outside when we visited, so make sure you have plenty of water and it is a good idea to visit in more moderate weather. You can visit their website here for more information.

Carlsbad Caverns is an unforgettable adventure for those of us who love to explore nature and the beauty of the natural world.
