Guadalupe Mountain National Park was a place we had not heard of before I talked with someone who mentioned they planned to visit this park. So of course, we wanted to check out the Guadalupe Mountains and we were not disappointed.

A Little About Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is nestled in the western Texas area, and has some rough terrain, yet beautiful peaks, valleys as well as panoramic and scenic views. The Guadalupe Mountains offer a wealth of natural beauty and Guadalupe Peak is the highest peak in Texas.

This park also has some history. The Butterfield Overland Mail Route, which ran during the mid-1800s, was in this area and there is a trail to the old station. The McKittrick Canyon Ranch House, dating back to the early 20th century, is also located within the park’s boundaries.

The park also offers a variety of animal and plant life and visitors may see hawks, golden eagles, mule deer, and coyotes as well as wildflowers and other plant life.

Good to Know

There are hiking trails and driving routes within the park. It is a fee area, so park passes and fees apply. A Visitors Center, Gift Shop and restrooms are in the main part of the park. The day we were there, it was quite warm, even hot and we walked sparingly, preferring to drive through the area. It is a good idea to make sure you have plenty of water with you as this is a desert area.  For more information, you can visit their website here.
