The Big Texan is one of those places we occasionally visit when in the Amarillo area. Since we visit sometimes when in the area, I guess you would say we are “some timers” (smile).  We always enjoy visiting this fun place.

The Birth of the Big Texan

It was 1960 when R J Bob Lee first opened the doors to this iconic establishment, which was then located on Route 66. The location was eventually moved to I-40 (which in many areas runs along Route 66).

72-Ounce Steak Challenge

The Big Texan is well known for its famous 72-ounce steak challenge. If you do not know what that means, if you can eat the 72-ounce entire steak meal, then the steak is free.

Not for me, or for Rich. There is no way either one of us could eat that much at one sitting, although I am sure there are those who could; and one must be admired in a way for being able to eat that much at one sitting within an hour.

The Motel

A motel was added in 1978, allowing visitors and others passing through to spend the night when in the area.  While we have never stayed there, it has bright colors and looks like a fun place to stay.

A Fun Visit

The real reason we stop is to enjoy the fun atmosphere. There are bright and fun colors everywhere, along with a western motif; The inside is filled with many kitschy and fun items. It is like being inside a theme park or carnival. It brings out the child in you.

Souvenirs for Everyone

There is a wide array of different items for sale in the Gift Shop. You will be sure to find something to take with you as a souvenir. And don’t miss the Rattlesnake hidden in the corner! It is not every day you see a Rattlesnake!

In Conclusion

It was a warm and pleasant day the day we were there, not too hot and not too cool. Those are the best days in my mind. I have a warm spot in my heart for this place as I always enjoy our visits there. Sometimes we grab a bite to eat; sometimes not. This day we did not have lunch there as we were on the road and just stopping by for a short while to enjoy the atmosphere.

The Big Texan is a great place for those of us who love roadside attractions, to explore and to enjoy a good meal. There is something for everyone and it is a fun experience, even if you do not have a meal.
