When we were in the White Rock area, our first stop was at the Visitors Center as that is the place where you can catch a bus to the National Bandelier Monument. Bob was very knowledgeable about the area, and suggested we visit Overlook Point. He seemed certain we would enjoy seeing the scenic views.

We visited Bandelier National Monument, and the Valle Caldera National Monument, which was a little farther down the road, before looking for Overlook Point a little later in the day.

Discovering Overlook Point

As we walked the path to the Point, we noticed clumps of vibrant black lava, a sign that this area was part of a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. Overlook Point is a beautiful natural and scenic area, offering panoramic views of the Rio Grande River nestled way below the Jemez Mountains.

If you would like to sit for a while and enjoy the peace and serenity that comes with being in nature and enjoy the views, there are a couple of benches overlooking this beautiful area.

I understand there are hiking trails for those who would like to embark on a hike. We had already walked a lot that day, being at Bandelier and Valle Caldera, so we just enjoyed taking in the scenery. If you happen to venture off the paved trail, do be careful as the rocks are most likely loose and it would be easy to slip and fall, and possibly be injured.

Directions

It was a little tricky for us to find, so to get there from Highway 4 in White Rock, turn on Rover Blvd and then Meadow Lane; then turn left onto Overlook Road. There is a sculpture at the entrance. When we first entered, we noticed there was a park in the front with ball fields, a playground, and a dog park. So just keep driving as Overlook Point is past the recreational areas. You will notice a small parking lot for Overlook Point.

We were so glad we stopped as Overlook Point is breathtaking. For those of us who are nature lovers, and love exploring the natural beauty in our country, Overlook Point is well worth visiting.
